Entering the water for the first time can feel so overwhelming, there is so much to know about the ocean, how to actually surf, keep yourself safe, and navigate crowded lineups (just to name a few). So join us for an afternoon of learning the basics, inside information, and skip the “kook” phase so you can enjoy your time in the water, calmly, confidently and competently.
You will learn how to:
Survey the beach for rip currents, risk factors and ideal spots of surf
Read the surf forecast
Choose the right board for conditions and skill level
Use proper paddling techniques to maximize efficiency
Do a “walk” up that is accessible to most everyone!
Control your board in crowded conditions
Position yourself on a wave and feel the right timing
Breath to increase stamina and confidence
Surf WITH your body
Communicate with other surfers and practice good “etiquette”

9am - Arrival and walk to beach camp
9:30am- Introductions
10am- Ocean and Wave Science

11:15am- Surf Skills: Part 1
LUNCH
12:30pm- 1st water session
1:15pm- Surf Skills: Part 2

Community Policy
After taking your first Foundational Surf Clinic, you’ll become part of our growing community of educated and confident surfers! We know we cover a lot of information in these clinics, which is why we offer this unique policy: you can come back and join the “classroom” portion of the clinic as many times as you want, for free! It’s an amazing opportunity to refresh your knowledge, delve into the science, and most importantly, connect with another fantastic group of surfers. Come share stories, build friendships, and ride the waves together. We can't wait to welcome you back into the water with us!
In-water instruction is reserved for first-time students, but we would love it if you surfed near us!
What do you need for class?

Be able to carry 30lbs comfortably for at least 1/2 mile potentially in intense heat or cold.
Able to be out in the elements for 6 hours and pack appropriately to accommodate your bodies temperature needs for rain or sun.
Be able to swim confidently in moving water.
Be comfortable putting your head in cold water and having saltwater in your eyes.
Be willing to learn and feel very silly while doing it!

An 8-9ft foam board is ideal for learning and practicing your wave catching skills. Your leash should be as long as your board, if not a little longer. If you’re renting equipment, double check the leash is long enough and sturdy before leaving the shop.

Our water is cold but those wetsuits work well! If you run warm and its a nice summer day a 4/3mm (4mm thick through the legs and torso, 3mm thick through the arms) will work great. If you run cold get a 5/4mm thickness and grab a pair of gloves and a hood. Most people surf in 5/4mm wetsuit here!

To keep your hands free for carrying that board down to the beach, pack a backpack to stash your water, lunch, changing towel, extra layers, and keys.
