Newport has 4 different surf shops! Pura Vida is north of town at Otter Rock/ Devils Punchbowl. Ossies is right across the street from Agate Beach. Newport Surf is just off Highway 20 on your way into town from the valley and South Beach Surf Shop is south of town. Call ahead or reserve online as equipment can go fast.

What happens if its raining?
We surf! If we didnt surf in the rain in the PNW we would never surf. Bring rain jackets and layers, just in case, even in summer. But once were in the water it doesnt matter anyway!
-
Do lessons ever get cancelled due to ocean conditions?
Occasionally. Early and late season lessons are at the highest risk but all ocean caused cancellations will result in a reschedule or refund.
-
How fit do I need to be to surf?
Surfing is all about muscle memory. You don’t need to be that fit or that flexible, it certainly helps but the right technique can take you a long way. Prepare for your lesson by swimming laps in the pool and taking yoga classes emphasizing hip and shoulder flexibility.
-
What kind of surfboard is the best to learn on?
8-9ft foam boards. All the extra foam gives you a stable surface to balance on that easily catches waves giving you the time you need to practice. When youre ready to change up your board start with a 9ft hard (epoxy or fiberglass) board.
-
Are there sharks out there??
Well of course. But they are waaaay out there. We will talk about risks associated with surfing during your lesson and put your mind at ease about all of them.
-
What if I wear contacts?
Most people can surf great with contacts, just keep your eyes closed underwater. If you wear glasses or sunglasses plan on switching to contacts for the water portion of the lesson to avoid loosing expensive lenses and ruining them in salt water.
-
Can you guarantee that I will stand up?
Not in your first lesson, though it’s highly probable. You will be able to catch your own waves though and that is more important! You will have the skills to feel confident in the water on your own and will have learned the proper technique to get to your feet. Take your time learning and be kind with yourself. Its not easy!
-
Will I be cold?
Nope! Wetsuits work surprisingly well keeping you warm and we are working hard while we’re out there. If you run cold, consider renting gloves and a cap.
-
How many people can I expect to be in my group?
We keep these lessons and clinics intimate with a 1 to 4 instructor to student ratio. At this size your instructor will be able to work one on one with you through out the day and ensure you get the guidance you need to succeed and feel safe the whole time.
-
How is Sea People different that other surf schools?
We offer immersive surf experiences. You will build a much deeper understanding of waves, ocean systems and how to connect with your board than other surf schools teach.
